Sean Baptiste Bourguignon D'Anville- cartographer, antique maps -D'Anville was a French Mapmaker born in Paris in 1697, his detailed and carefully-designed maps are typical of French taste at its best, but they are also noted for their accuracy. He strove to improve the science of map-making, and rejected all but the most reliable sources of information available to him. The D'Anville name appears on a number of English and other atlases, which used his maps as a source, or published his works in translation. The only decoration upon the maps as a rule is a rococo cartouche containing the title. D'Anville's Atlas Général dates from 1740. |
