Michael Drayton- cartographer, antique maps -Although a poet, his name is used in connection with the series of maps published in his Poly-Olbion. Drayton issued this in two parts, the first in 1612 and the second in 1632. The maps are English county maps which show little or no conventional detail, are romantically conceived, showing all rivers with an attendant naiad (water spirit). The principal topographical features such as hills or forests, with one or two of the main towns, are indicated by a symbolic figure. The maps are nonetheless quite interesting although very rare. They are believed to have been executed by William Hole. |
