Johann Baptist Homann

- cartographer, antique maps -

Homann was born in Bavaria, 1663, and settled in Nurnberg as an engraver.

His first atlas appeared in 1707, and it was followed by a succession of atlases bearing his name.

After his death in 1724, the business continued under his son, Johann Christoph, until 1730, when his son-in-law took over and continued it under the name Homannes Heredibus (Homann's Heirs)

The Homann name therefore survived in cartography up to the early nineteenth century.

The Homann maps have the heavy engraving characteristic of German work, with titles that sometimes include large scenes, theatrical and spectacular groupings of figures, animals, and much else besides.
