Pieter van den Keere- cartographer, antique maps -Pieter van den Keere was a Dutch engraver, bookseller and artist, working between about 1590 and 1620, much of the time in England, probably with Jodocus Hondius (who engraved many fine maps, including a number of Speed's). He engraved maps of many different types, but his name is principally connected with the beautiful set of miniature maps he began producing in Amsterdam in 1599, which were published by Bleau in 1617. These maps were based on Saxton's maps, with the English counties similarly grouped. From about 1620 the plates were reprinted and published by George Humble, one of tie partners who first published Speed's maps. Additionally he made use of Speed's name upon the title page of his miniature set of maps in order to realise the full potential of so great and popular a map-maker. The miniature series, furthermore, was issued at about the same time as the larger atlas was issued and at various dates up to around 1676. |
