William Kip- cartographer, antique maps -William Kip worked with William Hole on the 1607 series of county maps and is known to have been active from approximately 1598 to about 1635. Like Hole, he was an engraver of very high standard, and the series of county maps were produced in three issues, with William Camden's Britainnia. Although there are variations, a rule of thumb guide to the issues is as follows: the first issue, produced in 1607, has Latin text upon the reverse; the second issue, published in 1610, has a plain back, whilst the third issue of 1637 is the one most usually seen, and is plain upon the reverse, but the maps have a numeral added, usually in the lower left-hand corner. There are a few exceptions to this, including Buckinghamshire, Cheshire, Huntingdonshire, Ireland, Shropshire, Scotland and the East and North Ridings of Yorkshire. Also the Welsh counties of Brecknockshire, Denbigishire, Flintshire, Merionethshire, Pembrokeshire and Radnorshire. All these maps are without the numeral, and the map of Brecknockshire was completely replaced in 1637 by a map in similar style engraved by Robert Vaughan. |
