Robert Morden

- cartographer, antique maps -

Morden was a map maker, bookseller and publisher in the latter half of the 17th Century and the first half of the 18th. He was based in Cornhill, London, from 1688 to 1702, where he sold books and maps under the sign of the Atlas.

There are a number of Morden maps of various parts of the world, many of them small in size and they were issued from c.1680 in his Geography Rectified.

Morden is probably best known for his fine series of county maps, first published in William Camden's Britannia in 1695 and reused in subsequent issues of 1715, 1722, 1737, 1753 and 1772.

Each of the Morden county maps is clearly engraved, showing a reasonable amount of detail, and is embellished with a decorative cartouche. They are the most reasonably priced of all the larger 17th century county maps.

Morden also produced a set of small county maps of considerable charm, first issued in 1701, and subsequently under various titles, until 1738. Additionally Morden produced a number of large and fine maps of the world, or parts of the world, that are rare.
