Sebastian Munster

Born in Hessen in 1489, he is known to have worked from the 1530's, he was educated at Heidelburg and Tübingen.

His maps are printed from woodblocks and are the earliest maps generally available.

The double-page maps are the most coveted, especially the fine ones of the Americas, Africa, the British Isles, Scandinavia, as well as the maps of the World.

He produced the first separate maps of continents, although he did much other work, including most areas of Europe. Some of the earlier issues have fine woodcut borders upon the reverse.
