Robert De Vaugond

- cartographer, antique maps -

The De Vaugond name appears frequently in the antique map world because there are not only many maps by the two de Vaugondy's, but also a number of maps issued later.

Maps published both in Britain and the Continent acknowledge de Vaugondy as their source. The maps have many place names, improve on the accuracy of most of their predecessors, and are embellished with cartouches.

The elder, Gilles Robert, is shown upon the imprint on the maps as Le Sieur Robert, his son being Didier Robert de Vaugondy. They were active over the years c.1740-1780
