Seile - Vaughan - Chetwind- cartographer, antique maps -H. Seile, R.Vaughan and P.Chetwin are attributed with publishing a set of four maps of the continents, which were first issued in 1652 along with the Cosmography of Peter Heylyn DD. They are very similar in style and are of interesting and antique appearance, but usually closely cropped at the edges and sometimes creased. Fine examples are very scarce, and the map of the Americas from this series is particularly sought after, followed by that of Africa. In 1670 the maps were re-engraved by William Travethen and are much plainer in appearance, with only a small cartouche and without the ships and sea monsters which so enhance the earlier issues. |
